OEM Monitor Arm Manufacturer Checklist: What ThunderTech Pros Confirms Before Quoting Your Program

A working sample and a set of renderings are enough to start a conversation, but they are not enough to start a program. When a brand sends us a concept for a monitor arm, the sample answers questions about intent: roughly how the arm should move, roughly how it should look on a desk, roughly what the brand wants the end user to feel when the screen is repositioned. What the sample cannot answer is which of its hundreds of physical characteristics are requirements and which are accidents of how that particular unit was built. A prototype hole may be at a given position because the designer chose it, or because a hand-built fixture drifted. Until that distinction is written down, no manufacturer can quote it, and no inspector can accept or reject it.

The purpose of a document set is to convert a sample into a set of decisions that survive being handed to another person. That is the work this checklist describes, and it is the work our engineering team walks through when a brand arrives with a concept rather than a controlled drawing package.

Fix the product form before fixing the drawings

Mechanical and gas-spring monitor arms are different product forms, and the drawing review our team performs is not interchangeable between them. Each form resolves into its own component list, its own joint and pivot interfaces, and its own set of purchased and fabricated parts, so the arm form has to be fixed before ThunderTech can review the drawing set as a complete assembly. If your program is still open between the two, send the intended form together with the drawing or SKU and revision, and our engineering team can confirm which component and interface details we would need to review for that specific route.

An unresolved form choice does not stay contained in the concept stage. It leaves the downstream document set open, because the bill of material, the DFM notes, the tooling scope, the inspection plan, and the packing specification are all written against a particular assembly. Until the form, the revision, and the finish are confirmed, ThunderTech can describe the proposed route only in conditional terms and cannot close those documents. Sending the confirmed form and revision lets our team convert the proposed route into a defined document package for the program.

Related to form is the question of which parts are meant to be visible. On a desk product the user sees the arm at close range under office lighting, so the brand needs to state which surfaces are cosmetic, which are functional, and which are hidden inside the assembly. That single classification changes finish specification, handling, packing, and the entire inspection conversation downstream.

Build the drawing set at the component level

An assembly drawing alone is not a production document set. The assembly says how the product goes together; it does not say what to make. What can be quoted and inspected is a component-level package in which every part has its own drawing, its own material and thickness or profile, its own finish callout, and its own revision.

Tolerance priorities on a monitor arm are best confirmed from the interfaces and stated requirements in your project rather than applied uniformly across the part. The mounting pattern to the display, the clamp or grommet interface to the work surface, the pivot and fastener features between arm segments, and any welded or riveted joints each carry their own fit conditions, and the drawing should indicate which of those features are controlled and which are free. Purchased and semi-finished items need the same treatment. Gas spring units, bearings, fasteners, plastic covers, and cable management parts all need to be defined by specification rather than by the phrase “same as the sample,” since the sample supplier may not be the program supplier. Where a brand wants a nominated item, we would need the nomination in writing so the item can be treated as controlled rather than substitutable.

Write inspection criteria in language an inspector can apply

Inspection criteria are a program input, not something to be assumed after the parts exist. The quality plan should name the characteristics to be checked, the drawing revision they are checked against, the measurement method or gauge, and the acceptance condition for each one, including how surface and finish appearance is judged. Movement products complicate the visual standard because the product is handled during assembly and again by the end user. If a brand wants a strict cosmetic grade on a visible aluminium surface, that has implications for how parts are separated, handled, and packed at every step, and those implications belong in the quotation rather than being discovered later. Where a brand has an existing standard, we can review it against the proposed configuration; where a brand has none, we would ask for approved limit samples or written descriptions so the criteria can be agreed rather than assumed.

Treat packing and change control as part of the document set

Packing is frequently the last document written and the first one that causes trouble, because it depends on decisions the brand may not have made yet: whether the arm ships assembled or knocked down, what the retail or B2B presentation needs to be, what carton markings and barcodes are required, and what artwork approval process applies. Each of those changes carton size, insert design, and the labour content of the packing operation, so it is quotable only once fixed.

Change control is the discipline that keeps the whole set usable. Without a revision convention and a single named approver on the brand side, a program accumulates drawings that disagree with each other. Our team would ask, before quoting, which revision governs, how changes will be issued, and who is authorised to approve them, so that both sides are working to the same document.

Send the revision you treat as current, marked with its revision code and date, together with a short note on the points you know are still open. No. A signed sample records what one build looked like, while the production documents state what every later build is measured against.
